French 2 is designed for students who have advanced beyond the beginning level. Students should be comfortable using a variety of regular and irregular verbs to express these ideas.

French V (FORL 2552) is designed to meet the needs of students who have completed at least four years of French language study (or UAFS equivalent courses of French 1304, 1314, 2303, and 2313). A course at this advanced level allows the point of instruction to shift away from mechanics and structure to a more intensive format of language practice and fluency with a wider exposure to authentic resources.

Japanese 1 is designed as a college-level introductory course in Japanese language. Students will learn how to read and write both Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana), develop a basic vocabulary, be able to comprehend basic ideas both aurally and by reading, be able to express basic ideas both verbally and in writing, and possess reading and writing fluency of select Kanji (Chinese characters). The course of study will also include some instruction on Japanese culture.

Japanese II is designed as a second-year college-level course in Japanese language. Continuing where Japanese 1 left off, students will further develop their knowledge of Japanese vocabulary and grammar, improving aural and reading comprehension and also verbal and writing communication. Kanji knowledge will continue to develop, with students possessing reading and writing fluency of around 200 characters by the end of the course. The course of study will also include some instruction on Japanese culture.

Japanese III is a highly individualized course in which students apply the knowledge and skills they learned in Japanese I and II to understand authentic sources, communicate in Japanese, and create projects in the language. By the end of the course, students should be able to read, write, speak, and listen at the intermediate-low level based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

Students should be able to talk in present tense, use three standard verb forms, understand the basic irregular forms, have a knowledge of vocabulary in numbers, times, weather expressions, greetings, family discussions, and question techniques. They need to understand where the Spanish-speaking world is and some of the differences between the various Spanish cultures and American culture.

Spanish for the Professions is a course for students who plan to pursue careers in a professional, Spanish-speaking setting within the United States or abroad. The activities engage the learner in actual, substantive, and relevant content. This is a personalized course intended for the intermediate to advanced student of Spanish who wish to apply their language skills within the professional world. It is personalized because this year the students are interested in Linguistics, and our course is focused on Spanish linguistics and translation. The student centered approach includes in-class presentations, dialogues, case studies, grammar, and vocabulary for professionals.
